The accidental antihero of Queer People, the novel Budd Schulberg called "if not the Hollywood novelat least a truly seminal work on Hollywood," Theodore Anthony White, or "Whitey," a transplanted Chicago reporter of the Hecht-MacArthur sort, finds himself broke and without prospects in early 30s Hollywood, fumbling upwards through an improvised society of opportunistic "actors, authors, artists, acrobats and astrologers, coon-shouters, chorus girls, confidence men, comedians, camera-crankers, Christian Scientists, and call-houses, directors, gagmen, song writers, sadists, psalm singers, soothsayers, and sycophants, press agents, pugilists, policemen, perverts, pickpockets, panhandlers, pimps, playwrights, prostitutes, and parsons and playgirls (both unfrocked), bootleggers, bandits, bookmakers and Babbitts, remittance men, radio announcers and realators, Jews, Gentiles, Mohammedans and Rosicrucians, all living like Mormons, manicurists, mannikins, misanthropes, misogynists and masochists, women of all sexes and men of none" — the queer people of the title — and along the way, Whitey discovers in Hollywood what his fish-out-of-water counterparts of The Day of the Locust, The Last Tycoon and What Makes Sammy Run? never could: a very good time. Back in print almost a hundred years since its publication in 1930, Carroll and Garrett Graham's epochal classic remains one of the most lunatic yet clear-eyed works of Hollywood fiction ever written.

Book 004 in our collection features introductions by Peter Bart and Budd Schulberg, an extended essay by Justin Gautreau, and a series of articles and illustrations by the authors of the novel that have not been published since their first appearance in the 1920s.
